PROJECT BIG BELT

WORKSHOP FACILITATION & SYSTEMS DESIGN
CURIOSITY INC, THE GREENBELT FOUNDATION

Toronto is surrounded by a provincial greenbelt, one million acres of farmland and environmentally sensitive area. Now a world-class model for preservation, Ontario’s Greenbelt is the largest of its kind, spanning almost 2 million acres of protected forest, farmlands, and wetlands, and continues to grow. The greenbelt foundation is working to help keep farmers successful, strengthen local economies, and protect and grow natural features.

We were asked to facilitate systems and design thinking for Ontario food producers, distributors and buyers.

PARTICIPANTS
Food producers; everyone from small fruit orchards to big grain crop farmers, distributors, abattoirs, retailers, hospital buyers, university buyers, and restaurants.

WHAT WE DID
Extensive desktop and initial user research to understand the realities of the highly diverging stakeholders.

Workshops: Facilitated design thinking methods with the aim of creating long term sustainable solutions for the local food production, boosting local economy as well as giving the Torontonians access to better and fresher nutrition. We needed to bridge communication in this diverse group, and apart from varying methods of conversation and co-creation facilitation,  I created drawing ledgers to help people draw during development. Often adults are self conscious about drawing, especially with strangers. Providing simple stickman figures to copy, proved immensely helpful to cross collaborative scenario development.

OUTCOME
A series of new distribution systems and services. It was the first time all these stakeholders and players met. A great outcome of our process was the initiation of much needed new conversations, connections and relationships.
